Body Parts Found In Dumpster At Michigan Clinic

Included Were Patient Records, Medical Waste
And Body Parts Of Aborted Fetuses

State officials are investigating the alleged improper disposal of medical waste -- including body parts of aborted fetuses -- found in the Dumpster of a Lathrup Village clinic.

On Monday, officials from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality searched the trash bins of WomanCare clinics in Lathrup Village and Sterling Heights, spokesman Robert McCann said.

Sgt. Vincent Lynch of the Lathrup Village Police Department said the parts, other medical waste and patient records were found in the clinic's location on Southfield Road by an anti-abortion group, the Michigan-based Citizens for a Pro-Life Society. He said medical waste was taken away by a licensed hazardous waste hauler. Lathrup Village police will investigate the improper disposal of the patient records, a misdemeanor, he said.

According to state law, pathological waste -- which includes body parts and "products of conception" -- must be incinerated, ground and flushed down a sanitary sewer or buried in a cemetery.
